Our 2019 Year-end Broadside project celebrates the joy and importance of the hand-held, hand-forged nature of hand papermaking, as experienced among the tall pines and roiling skies of the Pacific Northwest. With inspiring art direction by Hand Papermaking’s dynamic board member Alta Price, the broadside is the result of the collaborative efforts of a poet, printer, and papermaker all based in the state of Washington. The broad-side features a lovely poem by Kathleen Flenniken (2012–2014 Washington State Poet Laureate), called “The Language of Making,” printed by Jessica Spring (of Tacoma’s one and only Springtide Press) on striking, handmade paper by Mary Ashton. The full edition of 100 signed and numbered copies, completed in the fall of 2019.
