“i am graffiti,” a poem by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson

Volume 2023 - Issue 1

The 2023 Year-End Broadside features “i am graffiti,” a poem by renowned Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg scholar, writer, artist, musician, and activist Leanne Betasamosake Simpson that was inspired by the 2010 performance “X” by the multi-disciplinary artist Rebecca Belmore of the Lac Seul First Nation. The poem first appeared in Simpson’s 2017 book, This Accident of Being Lost: Songs and Stories, and is reprinted by permission. Derick Wycherly, a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe, conceived of the project and contributed an edition of one-of-a-kind, pulp-stencilled handmade paper, created in the Welle Book Arts Studio at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Rachel Melis, an art professor at the college, printed the text with P22 Underground and Garamond typefaces. The edition of 100 signed copies was completed by the collaborators in the fall of 2023 to benefit Hand Papermaking during its annual year-end fundraising campaign.
