"The Book," a poem by Sandra Marchetti

Volume 2022 - Issue 1

The 2022 Year-End Broadside presents “The Book,” a poem by Sandra Marchetti that was inspired by the artist Brian Dettmer, whose work de- and re-constructs old books into fantastical new forms. The job of setting the poem into broadside form was tackled by three Arizona-based artists — paper- maker Zoë Goehring of Tucson’s Cave Paper, printer/designer/University of Arizona professor Karen Zimmermann, and book artist/illustrator Pamela Wood of Tempe. Zoë’s handmade paper was created at Cave Paper using Belgian flax, indigo and pomegranate dyes, and external gelatin sizing. The typography was designed and printed by Karen Zimmermann, using black, silver, and copper inks. And Pamela Wood’s technical illustration grew out of her love of books, Bauhaus, and the agave plants native to Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. The full edition of 140 signed and numbered copies was completed in the fall of 2022 to benefit Hand Papermaking’s annual year- end fundraising campaign.
