Kiln Casting With Plaster Powder

Winter 2021

A thick plaster powder casting featuring a tree design. Kiln bricks are used to create a mold dam, and the dry plaster bed is prepared before the precut design pieces are carefully placed on the bed. The mold is then filled with scrap glass cullet pieces by humping up the volume in the middle to produce a flow outward from the center for a rounded edge that doesn’t require cold working. A firing schedule is provided. Article originally published on page 58 in the Winter 2021 issue of Glass Patterns Quarterly®. Design, Fabrication, and Text by Mark Lauckner
